Title

Navigating Covid and School as an Out-of-State Student

Description

Navigating a pandemic has been hard on everyone. Navigating a global pandemic as a student is hard with the separation from your usual group of classmates and professors as well as being taken away from the normal classroom atmosphere. This pandemic has complicated the student experience enough, however, out-of-state students have a different experience then the students who live in close proximity to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus. Most students have had similar experiences with virtually attending class and being stuck at home. Out-of-state students have struggled with different hardships then those close to campus. While the pandemic has caused a feeling of loneliness amongst everyone, out-of-state students are struggling with a disconnection from the rest of the student body due to being so far away from everyone as well as, for some, never having even visited the campus.

These students have had to figure out how to get home at a moment’s notice during the beginning of the pandemic, as well as had to navigate doing schoolwork in an environment that they are not used to conducting schoolwork and attending class in. Some out-of-state students chose to move to Milwaukee despite the majority virtual classes in hope or expectation that classes would be able to move to in-person meetings with the right safety precautions. For those out-of-state students that either chose to move to Milwaukee at the beginning of the Fall 2020 semester or had to due to some in-person classes, the pandemic changed the usual moving experience and the experience of living in Milwaukee.

The items in this collection were chosen to show the impact of the pandemic on a group of students that may not be as represented or acknowledged when discussing the impact that the pandemic has had on college students. The pandemic has brought different stressors and circumstances to consider to these students, some that local students or at least students who do not live too far away from the campus, have had to consider.

The goal of this collection is to document the different ways that the Coronavirus pandemic has impacted out-of-state students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
