Founded in 1912, the Book Club of California has been a long-running institution in San Francisco that supports bookmaking, fine printing, design, literature, and scholarship, and continues to function today.  In 1962, in honor of the club’s 50th anniversary, a keepsake of twelve folders was created for members to learn more about the printing history of the organization.

Lawton Kennedy is one of the Bay Area printers who is notable for their contributions to the Book Club, printing many of the publications for the group over the course of decades.

One of the twelve folders is devoted to Kennedy and his practice; he took great pride in his work for the organization. According to this publication, the Book Club’s founding allowed printing in the Bay Area to flourish, free from the restraints that may have been imposed by other commercial publishers. Kennedy’s output for the group reflects this.
