"Amish Days is the consolidation of several visits through Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, spanning many years. My interest in the Amish ways comes through my background of working with animals, especially horses. Here again I made an outline of the material I wished to portray. I constantly added or deleted ideas for the woodcuts as the occasion demanded. I respected their desire not to be photographed and relied on post cards and books for use as reference as they are plentiful. I talked to the people, Amish and non-Amish and came to understand their ways without being condescending.
