Although not all founding members of the Irish Literary Theatre were aware of Yeats’s occult agenda, his work on the Irish Mystical Order was at the heart of his early plays and theories of national theater. Yeats wrote for the theatre a series of “miracle plays,” manifesting the existence of an invisible world.

He solicited dramatic material from Fiona Macleod because she shared his passion for the promotion of Celtic and occult causes, suggesting an adaptation of the short story “The Last Supper,” from The Washer of the Ford, for the theatre. Shown is a copy of her short story, which never was developed into a dramatic work.
