Seeking the inspiration to produce another Fiona Macleod book, Sharp retired to Loch Tarbert, Scotland, with his immediate circle: sister Mary, Edith Rinder, and Rinder’s husband. From letters to Elizabeth Sharp and Yeats, it is known that Sharp was writing at a prodigious rate, producing both short stories and the poems for From the Hills of Dream.

A letter from Fiona Macleod to Yeats suggests the William Sharp was assisting her in assembling the poems for From the Hills of Dream. This subterfuge reflects the role Edith Rinder played in enabling Sharp to write as Macleod. A section of the volume is dedicated to “Esclarmundo,” a name Sharp used for Edith Rinder.
