Limited edition of 1113 copies, signed by the illustrator. Like the original fine editions of Uncle Tom's Cabin, the Limited Editions Club brought out a Christmas edition. George Macy wrote that although the book's style was dated, the passion of Harriet Beecher Stowe's personal convictions propelled it to the status of a timeless classic:
Its English style is archaic and difficult. . . . What were Mrs. Stowe's most passionate paragraphs now read ludicrously in the light of our modern sophistication. What were Mrs. Stowe's deepest and most honest sentiments now seem puerile or sophomoric. Yet the reader who will pick up this book with the deliberate intention to read it through, will find himself, after a hundred pages, swept into the current of its power. Mrs. Stowe's passion was a turbulent current; and no serious reader, even seventy years later, can fight against it.
This edition, designed by John S. Fass, was printed at New York's Harbor Press. The book is bound in boards covered with three-quarter morocco leather and a hand-marbled sheet, and the text is printed on white rag paper. The work was illustrated with sixteen lithographs drawn on stone by Mexican caricaturist Miguel Covarrubias. Covarrubias began his career as a caricaturist for Mexican newspapers, then studied in New York, and worked for Vanity Fair.
