Edward Estlin Cummings was a New England poet and painter, another son of a Boston minister. Famous for his satires, he became part of the experimental "New Art" movement and lived mainly in Paris. He dedicated this work to Marrianne Morehouse, who requested he write a ballet based on Uncle Tom's Cabin.
