Another polemical anti-slavery novel, Dred was also based on real accounts. Because of the controversy surrounding the accuracy of Uncle Tom's Cabin's depiction of slavery, Stowe decided to document her sources from the beginning. Rather than publishing a key as she had for the prior work, she included appendices of citations within the original text. Dred, despite its similarity to Uncle Tom's Cabin, did not attain the earlier work's popularity.
