The present New Variorum Shakespeare makes a new and more concise survey of the criticism covered by the edition produced by Furness, brings the critical history up to date and publishes editions of the works that Furness never reached. Because of the amount of material accumulating daily on Shakespeare, editorship of a New Variorum play is seldom assigned to a single scholar: teams of scholars undertake the editions these days. A glance at the commentary on Jaques' speech helps to illustrate the problem.
The main editorial office of the Modern Language Association's New Variorum Shakespeare project had its home in the Golda Meir Library for several decades.
