William Eyres and Joseph Johnson were both Unitarians. Eyres’s printing press at Warrington published textbooks, storybooks, poetry and drama for the academy’s students. Johnson—whose accomplishments included establishing the London Medical Journal in 1783—published many rational works on subjects such as religion, politics, science, medicine, and education. He also promoted female authors and was a mentor to (Anglican) feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, who likened women’s oppression to that of slaves, a viewpoint she articulated in her most well-known book, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, published in 1792 by Johnson.
