The Nonesuch Press, named for the Tudor palace of Nonesuch, was founded in 1923 by Vera Mendel, David Garrett, and Francis Meynell. Nonesuch did not print its own books, but sought "to be a mobiliser of others' resources." Nonesuch was made up of a group of inspired individuals and a philosophy: "founded in the interest of those among book collectors who also use books for reading," particularly relevant to the printing of a new Bible designed to be read rather than admired as a religious relic.
This five-volume Bible was printed beginning in 1924, with The Apocrypha, volume four, being printed first. The slim volumes were vellum-bound with gilt lettering and borders; and copper-plate headpieces, tailpieces, and title page designs by Stephen Gooden, an engraver well-known for his illustrations of Aesop's Fables. Typeset by Nonesuch founder Francis Meynell, the page layout is simple, consecutively paged without verse numbering.
Volumes 1, 2, 3, and 5 are limited to 1,000 copies on Japon vellum and 75 copies on Arnold unbleached rag paper. Volume 4 is limited to 1250 numbered copies printed on Japon vellum.
