Self-Care for Them

Title
Self-Care for Them
Description
The creator of this piece, Chong Lee is a recent high school graduate, and a member of Milwaukee’s Hmong community. Lee’s goal in creating was to speak to the younger generations about the importance of taking COVID precautions seriously. In doing so, Lee drew upon his Hmong culture and incorporated themes he found noteworthy. “I came to focus on sacrifice and incorporate Hmong language and traditions.”
In this piece, the viewer is first drawn to an elderly person wearing a hospital gown is perched on a gurney. The expression on the individual is one of loneliness and longing. Upon further observation, the viewer notices a lager figure’s face encompassing the elder. This could be interpreted as the two individuals—presumably relatives—are on each other’s minds. More concretely, the larger but opaque figure is merely capturing their reflection in the glass they are required to stay behind. The blue tones throughout elicit somber emotions. This work speaks to a universal experience in the pandemic: the inability to see loved ones, especially if they are older and/or high-risk.
