An argument erupted between Sylvia Beach and English sponsor Harriet Weaver when an English edition was announced before all subscriptions to the Shakespeare and Company's first edition had been sold. Although Weaver held her own typescript, Beach ridiculed the idea of an English edition: "It will be quite impossible to bring out Ulysses in England for many years to come, if ever, which Miss Weaver knows quite as well as does Joyce." Although Weaver cooperated by withdrawing her original notice, she did bring out an English edition in 1922.
