The manuscript from which this facsimile is taken is the only surviving example of a fifteenth-century attempt to collect Chaucer's major poetical works in one volume. The exact date for the manuscript is unknown, although it is believed to have been written between 1412-1425. The work was originally illustrated and decorated on a grand scale. There are traces of at least one full-page illustration and the surviving pictures indicate a unique program of illustration in Chaucer manuscripts.
The manuscript was mutilated sometime during the sixteenth century, and pictures and borders with accompanying text were removed.
