This is a student's edition of Aristophanes, with blank leaves inserted between each printed leaf to allow for note-taking and translation of the text.
Prior to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, English academic presses at Oxford and Cambridge did not have a reputation for definitive scholarly editions of classical works, and many Continental scholars openly criticized the few classical texts produced by these presses. However, after the 1780s, Oxford began a program of producing high quality scholarly editions of many classical works which began to catch the attention of all European scholars. As a result, many Continental scholars took their editions of classical texts to Oxford for publication. Because of this, Oxford saw a large boom in classical text production in the early and mid-nineteenth century.
While not annotated, this edition is an excellent example of a training text, used to teach students the Greek language.
