Close Colectivo for Two-Weeks Minimum With Paid Leave for All Workers (Signed by Over 1400 People; Approved After Several Hours)
Colectivo has decided to keep the cafes open with optional attendance, which we believe is socially irresponsible. Continuing to operate cafes, no matter how careful, still puts coworkers and customers at risk. Optional attendance puts pressure on cafe managers to work with an unknown staff attendance, scrambling the night before to maintain standard level of operation. It's unreasonable to make my coworkers choose between wages and public health. Many of our staff live paycheck to paycheck simply can't afford a week (or two, or three) without pay.
We want to believe you have the company and its workers' best interests at heart, but we’re disappointed in our company's decision. Please consider doing the following: Closing all cafes for a minimum of two weeks, while paying employees their wages or salaries, including covered benefits, regardless of their PTO. This is in line with steps Stone Creek Coffee has taken to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of their valued employees. This isn't a vacation; it is a public health crisis. The World Health Organization has declared this a pandemic, Wisconsin has declared a state of emergency, and the CDC recommends social distancing. Even if members of our staff are young and presumably healthy, we can still act as vectors, incubating the virus without showing symptoms, and transmit the virus to our at-risk customers, coworkers, and by extension anyone that they come into contact with. Please abide by Colectivo's mission statement: we need to respect our products, people, and places.
Everyone is a customer, and everyone should be treated the same. It's disrespectful to force workers to choose between losing their wages, depleting their PTO, or putting public health at risk, while putting cafe management in a situation where they are guaranteed to be understaffed. Staff shouldn't fear missing work. Please consider resolving this issue. This is Colectivo's chance to show what this company believes in.
Thank you, Colectivo Staff
