Title

Sacrifice Now, So They Don't Have To (in Hmong and English)

Description

The creator of this piece, Chong Lee is a recent high school graduate, and a member of Milwaukee’s Hmong community. Lee’s goal in creating was to speak to the younger generations about the importance of taking COVID precautions seriously. In doing so, Lee drew upon his Hmong culture and incorporated themes he found noteworthy. “I came to focus on sacrifice and incorporate Hmong language and traditions.”
This digital painting portrays the experience Lee had during his senior year of high school. As a member of the class of 2020, Chong Lee was denied the experience of a traditional graduation ceremony, senior prom, and even the most fundamental expectation of in-person education. The inability to partake in these activities weigh heavily on the mind of the subject in the lower-right section of the painting. However, the subject sees these as sacrifices so the next generation, depicted by the younger subject on the lower-left side, may have these experiences. The words “sacrifice now, so they don’t have to” are written in the upper left in both Hmong and English, alluding to the fact that the virus knows no ethnic, political, geographical, or religious boundaries.
