An End of an Era

The photograph depicts UW-Milwaukee freshman Phareda Be at her high school graduation in 2020. Because of the small size of her graduating class, Be had the opportunity to have an outdoor, in-person commencement ceremony. She describes this picture as the commemoration of an end of an era and the start of a new one. Around the same time as her graduation, she also made the official decision to attend UW-Milwaukee on a full-ride scholarship. "I am a first-generation college student, so this means a lot to my family and even to me," she said. "I stood there proud with my Honors Diploma and my family looking at me while I pose[d] in front of the camera and the world to show what I have accomplished."
