De Civitate Dei
Title
De Civitate Dei
Creator
Augustine, St.
Description
Opening to each book extensively rubricated in red and blue, while book numbers and illuminated capitals appear on each page. Elaborate hand-drawn illustrations set this copy apart from other existing copies. An unsigned 19th century note on final leaf verso attributes the rubrication to a monk, Lazarus von Andlau, below which is an 18th century engraved armorial bookplate. Re-bound in 20th century dark green morocco, gold-tooled to a Grolieresque panel design
Commentary by Thomas Waleys and Nicholas Trivet, printed separately from the text
