Rakusus are sewn according to ancient traditions by adults who have decided to formally commit to Buddhist practice. Entirely hand-sewn, crafting a rakusu is an opportunity for practitioners to put Buddhist precepts into practice in their everyday lives. Upon completion, practitioners receive the Buddhist precepts from their priest, and then wear the rakusu during zazen. The first members of the Milwaukee Zen Center sewed their rakusu and recieved the precepts from Rev. Katagiri in early 1983, and included a notice of this commitment in a May letter with updates about the group.
