Organized in 1920, The Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist has been present on Milwaukee's East Side since 1921. While the formal headquarters of Christian Science were established in Boston, Massachusetts in 1879, the faith developed a significant presence in Milwaukee shortly thereafter. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the popularity of Christian Science grew quickly. As a result of this expansion, Fourth Church constructed and occupied the large building, with its towering spire, on Kenwood Boulevard across from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for nearly 70 years. Although a shrinking congregation and increasing maintenance costs led the members of Fourth Church to relocate to a smaller venue at the end of the twentieth century, its presence remains visible in Milwaukee today.
