In March of 2020, our small group of friends (three couples) started gathering virtually on Friday nights just to talk about what we were living through, what was happening at our kid’s schools, at work, with family and friends. We discussed how we were feeling about COVID, concerns for our families and often recounting hospitalization and death counts from the nightly news. Many nights our gathering would last for hours, starting at 9pm and lasting into the early hours of Saturday morning. Obviously, our group of friends is close, but we couldn’t have expected to talk for hours upon hours each week.
As of this post (March 2021) we have meet every Friday night for the past 51 weeks. Over the past year we’ve mostly met virtually, and sometimes a couple will call in from a campsite, a parent’s living room, a hotel room, or a cabin. Even though we ended a few calls after an hour or two, most conversations still go on for hours.
Over the months our weekly conversations have become a shining light at the end of many difficult weeks, something that is helping each of us through a global pandemic. When we started gathering in March of 2020, I was confident I knew almost everything about our closest friends. I never imagined there was so much more to learn.
