Yazmin Cruz, a college freshman at UW-Milwaukee, stands in front of UWM's fountain on the first day of classes. It is a crisp and sunny fall day, and no other students are in sight. While her Fall 2020 semester was virtual, she traveled to campus that day to toss a coin in the fountain so that she could make a wish. "I wanted to create a goal for myself as I embark on this four-year journey," she said. "My time in high school ended abruptly due to COVID-19, and I did not experience the picture-perfect ending I planned for. Above all else, I rose from that moment and began a new chapter. In a way, this photo reminds me that the ending of one chapter does not have to affect the beginning of the next.” Cruz's parents stood behind the camera that day, sending their daughter off on this new chapter as a first-generation college student.
