ACT UP Milwaukee

For almost a decade, ACT UP Milwaukee advocated for increased funding from the city, county, and state for AIDS service organizations and other community-based AIDS agencies. It pressured the Wisconsin Dental Association to ensure that dentists did not discriminate against individuals infected with HIV. It distributed safer sex literature and condoms to teenagers at high school proms and homecoming dances. And it even produced its own monthly cable TV show in Milwaukee, AIDS Activist TV, on Channel 47.

 

ACT UP Milwaukee was the most significant direct-action group to emerge during the AIDS crisis in Milwaukee. Through its aggressive and unapologetic activities, it focused the city’s attention on the needs of some of its most vulnerable citizens – people living and dying with AIDS.
