The professional Yiddish theatre was launched in Jassy (Iasi), Romania in 1876, when Avrom Goldfaden formed his first troupe. In short order, professional Yiddish theatre spread throughout Eastern Europe, established a foothold in parts of Western Europe, and thrived in the United States, with New York as its global center of gravity.
