Irene Mitkus
(1948 - 2000)
The Shape and Color of Research project and online exhibition are dedicated to the memory of conservation bookbinder and book artist Irene Mitkus. Ms. Mitkus, who died in November 2000 after a battle with cancer, was a much beloved and respected figure in the Milwaukee-area arts, conservation, and library communities. Her departure was, and continues to be, a tremendous loss for Milwaukee. Her work on this project, and her artist's book, Book of Sacred Trees, produced for this exhibition, were the final acts of her productive life. I am honored to have known her and to present her work in this exhibition and catalog.
