Congregation Beth Israel engaged and continues to engage in social outreach. Rabbi Herbert Panitch, CBI Head Rabbi from 1970 to 1995, exemplified this spirit. Rabbi Panitch served as Chairman at the Milwaukee Jewish Conference during the first week of March in 1976. This article from The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle (March 11, 1976) illustrates Rabbi Panitch's great energy and enthusiasm for outreach to Soviet Jewry. He is quoted to have said, "We need to call out to the community in Milwaukee to channel energies into the issue of freedom and liberation of Soviet Jews."
