This is a digital Sanborn map of Milwaukee, WI from 1894. This image represents the vicinity where Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid’s ancestors first established synagogues in the historic Hay Market neighborhood. B’ne Jacob was incorporated here in 1884, although we are not certain of the exact location. Moses Montefiore Gemeinde was located at Fourth and Vliet Streets. Anshe Jacob was located at Market and Knapp Street briefly before combining with Moses Montefiore Gemeinde in 1891. The merger formed Beth Hamedrash Hagodol, which was located at 462 Fifth Street. The congregation was reconstituted as Congregation Beth Israel in 1901 in response to financial difficulties at Beth Hamedrash Hagodol.
