St. Matthew C.M.E. was established in Milwaukee in 1918. It began with one Reverend, William S. Ferguson, and six members. The roots of St. Matthew reveal the incredible tie the church has to its community. The bond between church and community runs deeper than the members of the congregation. A continued growth of membership throughout the twentieth century allowed for St. Matthew to purchase its current building in 1958. From this location, St. Matthew has been active with its community through weekly services, advocating during the Civil Rights Movement, weekly breakfasts, Community Brainstorm forums, retreats, choirs, scholarships, and the welcoming of all. From 1918 until 2019, St. Matthew C.M.E. has demonstrated its ability to be more than a place of worship, it has been a community gathering place. You can read the church's full history here.
