Teacher Appreciation Week
Every first full week of May, schools across the United States celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. May of 2020 was no difference. But instead of lining school hallways with posters, student expressions of gratitude were forced onto social media platforms. Between May 4 and May 8 of 2020, many people took to social media to thank their teachers. In a slideshow posted on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, students, faculty, and staff from the Milwaukee School of Languages shared their appreciation for their teachers. Signs, emails, and posters in various languages written by students in several programs expressed their gratitude. The Shorewood School District encouraged their students to show their teacher appreciation by publishing this poster on their website. Hoping students would participate in the project, the district hoped that each day, students would take up each task to express their gratitude for their teachers’ hard work.

Chance the Rapper and Margaret Roushar, MPS Teacher
Celebrities and athletes have also shown their support for aiding teachers and public schools who are in need during the pandemic. On April 21, 2020, Milwaukee Bucks player Khris Middleton donated $25,000 to the Milwaukee Public Schools Covid-19 Relief Fund. While this did not occur during Teacher Appreciation week, it shows the concern for students and teachers struggling with the changes the pandemic has brought to Milwaukee schools. It was not long before Chicago native Chance the Rapper extended his thanks to teachers. For year Chance has been calling for greater aid to public schools. And at the start of teacher Appreciation Week, Chance announced his intention to donate funds to several teachers across America. The videos and articles here highlight various Wisconsin News Outlets’ cover of Chance’s $15,000 donation to Milwaukee Public School teacher Margaret Roushar. He also donated $15,000 to her school.
