Violence, greed, and vice rule the town of Papayal in the Amazon jungle. The only distractions in thi devastated mining village are the bar, the brothel, and the occasional traveling cinema. While everyone is watching a movie one night, Aroldo, Carmen's lover, breaks open the hotel safe where the miner's gold is kept. He escapes with Carmen and the loot, but is later robbed and murdered leaving only Carmen's daughter Isabel behind to pay the debt.
