In 1909 in the canals of Xochimilco, Mexico, the beautiful Maria Candelaria and the honorable Rafael desire to be married despite the adversitites they confront. The people of the pueblo hound & detest Maria for for being the daughter of a prostitute, whom they murdered for bringing shame to the chinampas. The leader of the village desires Maria for himself and takes advantage of the hatred to the couple for his own benefit.
