Loosely based on Miguel Barnet's novel Cancion de Rachel, the film brings to life the atmosphere of Havan theater life in the 1920s and 30s. Rachel works as a chorus girl in a carnival atmosphere where dancers are expected to be prostitutes. In love with one man who loves her, she aspires to perform in the Alhambra, a theater with fine talent but only for male audiences. After her lover's suicide, she becomes the belle of the Alhambra, with all the glory and tragedy such success can bring.
